A practical shop guide · 01

Decide whether a product belongs on Etsy

Build a product decision file before you commission a sample or commit to inventory.

In this guide
01

Start with the item and your role

Describe exactly what the buyer receives and how it comes into existence. A useful record reads: “I draw the artwork; a manufacturer produces the enamel pin; a logistics provider consolidates and dispatches the cartons.” Save the dated drawing and the production specification alongside that statement.

Use Etsy’s Creativity Standards to identify the relevant route: made, designed, handpicked or sourced by a seller. The route must fit the actual item and work performed. Choosing a label in a listing does not change the underlying product.

02

Separate a supplier from a production partner

Map each participant to an activity: supplying materials, manufacturing your design, purchasing, inspecting, storing or shipping. This tells you what evidence and listing disclosures you need. A provider that only buys or transports goods does not perform the same role as a manufacturer producing your original design.

Ask the manufacturer who will carry out the work and where the finished goods will dispatch from. When production partner disclosure applies, complete it for the relevant listings. Keep the approved design version so a later reorder cannot quietly substitute a different product.

03

Test the idea against a concrete sourcing case

Consider three different briefs. Ready-made bracelets chosen from a wholesale catalogue need a specific eligibility basis; a new box or shop logo does not supply one. Pins manufactured from your own drawings call for design records and an appropriate production arrangement. Loose jump rings sold for jewellery making call for a craft-supply review based on their intended use.

Treat these as routes to investigate, rather than approvals. Record the exact rule and the product facts supporting your conclusion. Another shop selling a similar item is weak evidence: you cannot see its creative process or account history.

04

Check rights and claims before sampling

Make a separate record for artwork, characters, logos, fonts and photographs. Note who created each asset and the permission that covers your intended commercial use. A supplier’s willingness to print a design is not evidence that you hold those rights. Resolve uncertainty before paying for custom tooling or a bulk run.

Match material and performance claims to evidence for the actual item. “Hypoallergenic”, “food safe” or “suitable for children” needs more than a catalogue heading. Identify any specialist product checks before selecting the sample and production budget.

05

Make a proceed, revise or hold decision

Finish with a one-page file containing the product description, your contribution, the rule reviewed, design or supply records, required disclosures and unresolved questions. Proceed to sampling when the basis is clear and the remaining checks have an owner. Revise the product when the contribution or intended use needs changing. Hold the purchase while a material question remains open.

Sample approval answers whether a supplier can make the agreed item. It does not settle platform eligibility, intellectual property rights or product safety. Keep those decisions visible when requesting purchasing and logistics support.
